Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Phil’s youngest sister, Renee is a senior in high school this year, and when we learned that her and her class were going to Playa del Carmen for their senior spring break trip, we asked if told her we would come along as “chaperones.” My mother-in-law was already planning on going on the trip as one of the official parent chaperones, so we decided to volunteer ourselves as “assistant chaperones” and have us a fabulous spring break trip to Mexico!

We stayed for a week at the Sandos Playacar Beach Resort and Spa, which was literally right on an absolutely gorgeous beach! Sandos is an all-inclusive resort, and we couldn’t believe the deal we got for a week-long vacation. We stayed in an ocean-view room (conveniently enough on the opposite end of the resort as all of the 18-year-old high school seniors), with a patio that lead out to the beach area. Even though the room wasn’t one of the nicest rooms we’ve ever stayed in, we didn’t mind considering the price and the view!

The resort was covered with pools and bars at almost every turn, which was pretty much the perfect combination for a beach vacation. Although the crowd (around 75% high school seniors on their spring break) wasn’t our usual vacation crowd, it was EXTREMELY entertaining to say the least! We quickly found out that the resort had an adult pool with a swim-up bar, as well as a gorgeous spa with a private pool. We frequented those two areas during the day when we were looking for some time away from the madness 🙂 We had a great time on the main stretch of beach too though, where they had a DJ every day, tons of food and drinks, sand volleyball, bocce ball and a very large area of lounge chairs.

Only a few miles down the street from the resort was this great marketplace area with local shops and restaurants. We decided to venture off the resort one day to check it all out, which provided me the opportunity to put my old Spanish skills to work! It was refreshing to know that I hadn’t forgotten all of it yet, and it was nice to be able to practice. Plus, we found some great souvenirs for really low prices!

Overall, we had a great week spending time with Renee, getting some relaxing beach time in, people watching, drinking cervezas and pretending we were young again 🙂
